Remarks by HE Ambassador Cheng Jingye at the Reception to Celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China
2019/10/15

It's a great delight for me and my colleagues to be here and gather with friends from all walks of life in the Northern Territory to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. This is the first time for the Chinese Embassy to host a National Day reception in NT. First of all, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all guests and express my sincere thanks to the support rendered by the NT government and the Darwin City Council in making this reception happen.

Two weeks ago, grand celebrations were held in Beijing to mark the 70th anniversary. In his speech at the celebration, President Xi Jinping pointed out, "Over the past 70 years, under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, the Chinese people, with great courage and relentless exploration, have successfully opened the path of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Along this path, we have ushered in a new era. Having caught up with the world and made great strides, we are now marching forward at the forefront of our times with boundless energy!"

President Xi's remarks highly summarized the remarkable achievements in China that captured the world's attention over the past 7 decades. Through persistent and relentless efforts, China has achieved a historic leap in the composite national strength, and Chinese people's living standards have been remarkably improved. Being the second largest economy in the world, China also enjoys a leading position in terms of trade in goods, manufacturing capacity and foreign exchange reserves. More than 750 million people were lifted out of poverty. The per capita GDP is now close to 10,000 US dollars. Average life expectancy has extended from 35 to 77. China has the largest middle-income population and the fastest-growing consumer market in the world. China has become a major scientific and technological player, with R&D expenditure ranking second in the world. China also ranks second in terms of the number of scientific papers cited and the number of international patent applications.

Over the past 70 years, China has not only developed itself, but also contributed to the world peace and injected impetus to the common development of all nations. China has become the leading engine of global development and an anchor of stability for world peace. China is the second largest financial contributor to the United Nations and the largest peacekeeping personnel contributor among the permanent members of the UN Security Council. For more than a decade, China has been a prime engine powering global growth. The Belt and Road Initiative has strongly promoted global connectivity and infrastructure building, becoming a widely participated platform for international cooperation.

Dear friends,

China has achieved epoch-making changes in 70 years, and the Chinese nation has realized a tremendous transformation: it has stood up, grown rich and is becoming stronger. At present, the Chinese people are striving to achieve the "Two Centenary Goals" with full confidence. No force can ever stop the Chinese people and nation from marching forward.

Recently, the Chinese government published a white paper titled "China and the World in the New Era." The paper pointed out that China cannot develop in isolation from the rest of the world, nor can the world as a whole maintain peace, development, prosperity and stability without China. China continues to place its own development in the coordinate system of human development, pursuing mutually beneficial cooperation and joint progress. China is always a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a guardian of global order.

Just as President Xi stressed in his celebration remarks, "China will work with people in all countries to build a community with a shared future for mankind, and to create a world bathed in peace and development."

Dear friends,

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Australia 47 years ago, huge progress has been made in China-Australia relations which brought tangible benefits to both countries and their peoples. To maintain healthy and stable development of bilateral relations through persistently increasing political mutual trust and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation, serves the common interests of both sides. It is not only what the people aspire for, but also in the trend of times.

Cooperation at local level is an important part and a solid basis of China-Australia relations. The Northern Territory is Australia's nearest part to China, and Darwin is the Asia Gateway of Australia. Therefore, the Territory has unique advantages in developing its cooperation with China and participating in the Belt and Road cooperation. Since his inauguration, Chief Minister Gunner visited China almost every year. China has become top trading partner and the second largest export market for the Territory. In the 2018/19 financial year, bilateral trade totaled 2.666 billion AU dollars, accounting for nearly a quarter of NT's total foreign trade. Key projects such as the expansion of the Port of Darwin, China-Australia Rizhao Industrial Park, and Australia-China Darwin Industrial Park are progressing smoothly. Direct flight from Shenzhen to Darwin operated by Donghai Airlines has become an important link for deepening people-to-people exchanges. China continues to be one of the largest source of overseas students in NT. This year, China provided two government scholarship grants to Darwin University for the first time.

In a few days, Chief Minister Gunner and Lord Mayor Vatskalis will lead respective delegations to visit China again. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the sister Territory/Province relationship between NT and Anhui Province, and the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Darwin and Haikou. I hope that both sides will make full use of this occasion to enhance exchanges and expand cooperation in the interests of the people of both sides and China-Australia overall relations. The Chinese Embassy in Australia will as always provide all necessary assistance and support in this regard.

I would also like to mention in particular that all the achievements China has made in the past 70 years contain the active input and valuable support from the Australian Chinese community. You have also played a unique role in promoting close relations between China and Australia. I would like to convey my best regard to you all and hope that you will make further contributions to China-Australia friendship.

In conclusion, may I propose a toast:

To the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China;

To the healthy and stable development of China-Australia relations:

To the friendly and mutually beneficial cooperation between China and the Northern Territory; and

To the best of health for all our guests.

Cheers!

Thank you!
