Chinese Embassy Spokesperson's Remarks
2020-06-12 14:14

We strongly condemn Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne’s comments regarding China’s national security legislation for Hong Kong in her recent interview with ABC on June 12.

We would like to reiterate that the legislation only targets a very narrow category of acts that seriously jeopardize national security and has no impact whatsoever on Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy, the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents or the legitimate rights and interests of foreign investors in Hong Kong. It will ensure implementation of "one country, two systems" and maintain Hong Kong's long term stability and prosperity. There is no need whatsoever for foreign investors and the law-abiding Hong Kong residents to worry.

The decision to enact such legislation has won strong support from the entire Chinese people including Hong Kong compatriots. As many as around three million Hong Kong residents have expressed their support in signature campaigns.

Hong Kong SAR affairs are purely China's internal affairs and brook no foreign interference. The Chinese government is determined in safeguarding national sovereignty, security and development interests, implementing the "one country, two systems" principle, and opposing external interference in Hong Kong affairs. We urge the Australian side to be discreet with its words and deeds, stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs and China's internal affairs, and do more to promote Hong Kong's prosperity and stability and the bilateral relations with China.
