Facts and Fallacies on China's fight against COVID-19(Ⅱ)
2020/04/15

Fallacy II: China tries to gain geopolitical influence by launching a propaganda campaign about its overseas assistance in the fight against COVID-19.

Fact: China has so far provided emergency assistance to over 130 countries and international organizations, including a donation of US$20 million to the WHO. Altogether 13 Chinese medical expert teams have been sent to fight against the pandemic along with countries in different parts of the world. Over 70 video conferences with experts from more than 150 countries and international organizations have been held to share best practices. Localities, enterprises and civil groups in China also donated medical supplies to more than 100 countries, regions and international organizations. From March 1 to April 4, Chinese companies has exported a large amount of medical supplies, including 3.86 billion masks, 37.52 million protective gears, 2.41 million infrared thermometers, 16,000 ventilators, 2.84 million testing kits and 8.41 million protective goggles. All these help greatly alleviate the shortage of medical supplies in many countries and meet the urgent needs of its people.

China's contribution and assistance are well received world widely. It is simply misleading to accuse China of employing a coronovirus propaganda to gain geopolitical bonus.

Firstly, the Chinese are a grateful people. As a Chinese saying goes, a drop of water shall be returned with a burst of spring. During the most difficult period of China's fight against COVID-19, we received help from many countries. To help the others in difficulty is one way to return the favor and reciprocate the kindness.

Secondly, the pandemic is a common enemy to all mankind. No one is safe until everyone is safe. To help others is to help yourself. Countries and people must pull together, which is the only way to beat the virus.

Thirdly, just as a Chinese proverb says "better save one life than build a seven-storeyed pagoda". What China has done is out of humanitarian heart to help countries and people in need and to save lives and safeguard public health.

Fourthly, What China has done is to fulfill its international obligations as a Permanent Member of the UN Security Council and an important member of WHO.
