Xi Jinping Meets with Governor-General Peter John Cosgrove of Australia and Attends Welcome Ceremony

On November 17 local time, President Xi Jinping met in Canberra with Governor-General Peter John Cosgrove of Australia.

Prior to the meeting, Peter John Cosgrove held a grand welcome ceremony for Xi Jinping on the lawn of the Government House. Upon arriving, Xi Jinping and his wife Mme. Peng Liyuan were warmly greeted by Governor-General Peter John Cosgrove and his wife. A 21 gun-salute was sounded. Xi Jinping reviewed the guard of honor. The two heads of state together stepped on the reviewing stand, and the military band played the national anthems of China and Australia.

Following the welcome ceremony, Xi Jinping and Peter John Cosgrove had a sincere and friendly talk.

Peter John Cosgrove, on behalf of the Australian people, warmly welcomed Xi Jinping's state visit to Australia, and expressed his belief that President Xi Jinping's visit will surely and strongly promote the development of bilateral relations and benefit the two peoples.

Xi Jinping expressed that Mr. Governor-General stressed that Australia takes its relations with China as a priority, which I highly appreciate. I paid my first visit to Australia in 1988, and the width and depth of cooperation between the two countries today were unimaginable 26 years ago. I expect to deepen my understanding of Australia through this visit. We decided to uplift bilateral relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership and announced the substantive conclusion of the negotiation on the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, opening a new chapter for bilateral friendly cooperation. Looking into the future, China-Australia relations are blessed with a bright prospect.

Xi Jinping noted that Governor-General Peter John Cosgrove spent most of his life in the army and made positive contributions to advancing China-Australia defense cooperation. China highly values the development of the relations between the two armies, and is willing to enhance China-Australia defense cooperation and together safeguard regional peace and stability through high-level mutual visits, joint exercise and training, defense consultation and other means.

Peter John Cosgrove expressed that he congratulates on the establishment of bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership and the substantive conclusion of the negotiation on the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement, which fully embodies the huge potential and strong will of bilateral cooperation. He is pleased to see that the two armies are increasing exchanges and cooperation and have carried out joint exercise and training. Chinese soldiers are top-ranking, leaving him a deep impression. He is fully confident in Australia-China relations.
