On the afternoon of 15th February, Chinese Ambassador to Australia, Madame Fu Ying, accompanied visiting China's Science and Technology Minister, Prof. Xu Guanhua to meet respectively with Australian Minister for Industry, Tourism and Resources, Hon Ian Macfarlane MP and Minister for Education, Science and Training, Hon. Julie Bishop MP. The ministers held sincere and friendly talks. When meeting with Minister Macfarlane, Minister Xu exchanged experience and ideas with Macfarlane on how to promote science and technology innovation in the countries and how to build an innovative society. During the meeting between the two science and technology ministers, Minister Xu and Minister Bishop discussed the decision on doubling the investment of the two Ministries on the China Australia Science and Technology Special Fund and on further improving scientifically the management of the projects. The two ministers agreed to further strengthen science and technology cooperation and exchange between the two countries.

On the morning of 16th, Minister Xu and Minister Bishop, respectively on behalf of China's Ministry of Science & Technology and Australian Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), signed a Framework Memorandum of Understanding on Scientific and Technological Cooperation. Ambassador Fu Ying and Dr. Geoff Garrett, CEO of CSIRO, were present at the signing. After this event, Ambassador Fu accompanied Minister Xu to go to the Australian Academy of Science. Minister Xu made an presentation there to the Australian science community on China's Science and Technology Towards the New Era and answered questions from the audiences. Minister Xu's speech has received active response from the attendances.
On the afternoon of the day and together with Ambassador Fu, Minister Xu and his delegation visited the Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering, Australian National University. The group was warmly welcomed and received by the top scientists in the plasma and laser areas. (End)
