Australian Foreign Minister sent letter to Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi to express condolences to earthquake victims

On 16th April, Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Stephen Smith wrote to his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi to convey condolences and sympathies on behalf of the Australian people to the families of victims in the severe earthquake that hit Yushu, Qinghai Province on 14th April. Minister Smith said the resilient people will rebuild their homes and the Australian Government stands ready to assist.

On 17th, Minister Yang replied by sending a telegraph message of gratitude to Minister Smith. He said the Chinese Government is making all-out relief efforts, and that under strong leadership of the Chinese Government and with concerted efforts of the Chinese people and support from the international community, the affected people will surely overcome the disaster and rebuild their homes.
