On the afternoon of January 17, 2013, Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met with Thai Senate Speaker Nikom Wairatpanij at the Great Hall of the People.

Wu spoke highly of China-Thailand ties. He said since the establishment of diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have withstood the test of time and changes in the international situation, and have always maintained a healthy and stable development. The establishment of China-Thailand comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership has injected strong impetus to bilateral relations. He said both sides have kept frequent high-level exchanges, citing progress in trade, economy, railway, water conservancy, clean energy and other key areas. Wu said China's development of friendly ties with Thailand is an established diplomatic policy that conforms to the historical trend and works for the common interests of both sides. "We would like to work with Thailand to carry our friendship forward, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation and boost the development of China-Thailand comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership," Wu said.

Wu underlined the NPC's commitment to developing ties with the upper house and the lower house of the Thai National Assembly, calling for more efforts to maintain friendly exchanges at all levels, share experience in state governance, democracy and legal system construction. He also urged both sides to keep closer coordination in multilateral parliament organizations so as to achieve sustainable development of the two countries and deepen Sino-Thai friendship and cooperation.

Nikom said Thailand-China cooperation has made great progress in recent years. Developing friendly ties with China is the consensus of the Thai royal family, government, legislature and society. The belief that "China and Thailand are as close as one family" is deeply rooted in the hearts of both peoples. Nikom said the Thai National Assembly attaches great importance to friendly ties with China's NPC and will make contributions toward boosting bilateral cooperation in politics, economy, culture and tourism so as to further develop the ties.
