China and Africa Can Definitely Become Closer Partners in the Joint Construction of the "Belt and Road"
--Wang Yi Talks about Feelings of His Visits to Four African Countries

On January 16, 2018 local time, after concluding his visits to four African countries, Foreign Minister Wang Yi briefed the press at inquiry on his visits.

Wang Yi said that Chinese Foreign Ministers always choose Africa as the destination of their first visits every year. This practice has been kept as a good tradition for 28 years and aims to show to the international community that China will always stand together with its African brothers. No matter how it develops, China will always view itself as a developing country. Besides in economy, more importantly, China and African countries can be partners with mutual trust and sincere cooperation in politics. The four African countries I visited this time are in different situations, but also have quite a lot in common.

First, the international influence of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is still developing and expanding, especially in developing countries such as African countries. Leaders of the four African countries I visited all proactively congratulated on the successful convening of the 19th CPC National Congress and expressed their admirations for China’s great development achievements, hoping to learn from China’s development experience.

Second, various African countries wish to take the path of economic diversification. They have realized that the single development mode which relies on exports of raw materials and resources and energy does not work anymore. And it is in helping African countries realize economic diversification that China’s advantages lie. Among the China-Africa Ten Major Cooperation Plans proposed by President Xi Jinping at the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the first is to support the industrialization in Africa. China is fully qualified and capable of becoming the most reliable and ideal cooperative partner in the process of economic diversification and industrialization in African countries.

Third, various African countries are eager to strengthen cooperation with China. At the strong request of African countries, China will host the summit of FOCAC in Beijing within this year. Leaders of the four African countries I visited all expressed their willingness to attend at invitation the summit in China and showed great interest in the “Belt and Road” initiative. I introduced to them that the “Belt and Road” initiative has become an important platform for international cooperation and African countries are welcomed to take an active part in it. In the process of the joint construction of the “Belt and Road” by China and the world, African countries cannot be absent but play an important role. As China and Africa enjoy high economic complementarities, both sides can realize the docking of their development strategies through the joint construction of the “Belt and Road”, so as to provide more resources and methods and expand a broader market and space for the realization of modernization in Africa. I believe that with the efforts of both sides, the FOCAC Beijing Summit this year will surely become another historic event. China and the African countries can definitely become closer cooperative partners in the process of the joint construction of the “Belt and Road”.
