Wang Yi Meets with President-elect Sebastian Pinera of Chile

On January 21, 2018 local time, Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with President-elect Sebastian Pinera of Chile in Santiago.

Wang Yi firstly conveyed President Xi Jinping's warm greetings to Sebastian Pinera, and expressed that Sebastian Pinera has committed to China-Chile friendship over the years, making important contribution to this regard. During and after the election, Sebastian Pinera stressed again that the relationship with China is the top priority for Chile's diplomacy, and he is willing to devote to deepening bilateral cooperation in various fields. China highly appreciates this statement. It is believed that under the joint guidance of leaders of both countries, China-Chile comprehensive strategic partnership will certainly and constantly step into new stages.

Wang Yi stressed that China is ready to further deepen comprehensive strategic partnership with Chile. At bilateral level, the two sides should further consolidate political mutual trust, continuously support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests; and take the signing of the deal on upgrading China-Chile Free Trade Agreement as an opportunity to enhance economic and trade contacts, and expand practical cooperation in such areas as investment and innovation. At regional level, both sides should promote the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" by China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), and support the China-CELAC Forum in constantly achieving new outcomes. At international level, both sides should jointly adhere to multilateralism and tackle climate change and other global challenges hand in hand. China will fully support Chile in well hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit in 2019, support free trade and oppose protectionism, in a bid to boost the building of the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific.

Sebastian Pinera asked Wang Yi to convey his warm greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping, and expressed that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Chile and China more than 40 years ago, bilateral relations have developed in a sustained and stable manner. Both sides have constantly deepened political mutual trust with fruitful results yielded from cooperation in various fields. Sebastian Pinera has paid close attention to the convening of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, and attached high importance to the grand blueprint for China's future development drew by the Congress. He is very optimistic about China's development prospects. Chile will firmly uphold the one-China policy and actively support the "Belt and Road" initiative. The country stands ready to further cement bilateral communication and coordination on international and regional hotspot issues, and constantly consolidate bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, so as to jointly write a new chapter of relations between the two countries.
