2008/08/12

BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin met here Monday with People First Party (PFP) chairman James Soong from Taiwan, who was invited to attend the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), congratulated Olympians from both sides of the Taiwan Strait for their good results at the Games.

He hoped Taiwan Olympians could achieve more in the following days.

According to the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, the Chinese Taipei Olympic delegation comprises 133 persons, including 80 athletes competing in 15 events.

Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said people across the Strait should seize the "hard-earned opportunity" of development in cross-Strait relations to enhance exchange and cooperation.

James Soong said the Games are an honorable event for compatriots from both sides of the Strait. The Games have reflected the great achievements made by the mainland after its reform and opening up.

He said the PFP would continue to play an active role in creating favorable conditions for promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.
