On June 6, 2012, Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping met with visiting Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev at the Great Hall of the People.

Xi first extended welcome for President Nazarbayev to visit China and attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. He said that the presidents of the two countries have held fruitful talks and made new strategic planning for bilateral ties. He believed this visit will inject new impetus into comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries. Xi said since the establishment of diplomatic relations 20 years ago, the ties between China and Kazakhstan have developed rapidly in an all-around manner. He said the two nations firmly support each other on major issues concerning their respective core interests and make close coordination and cooperation on international and regional affairs, to safeguard the common interests of the two states and promote peace, stability and development in the region as well as that of the world at large. Xi said the Chinese side is ready to join hands with Kazakhstan to contribute to developing a long-term stable, vigorous comprehensive strategic partnership.

Xi said both China and Kazakhstan are in a critical period of national development and they should give full play to their advantages of geographical proximity and economic complementarity and comprehensively strengthen cooperation to achieve common development and prosperity. Both sides should expand the bilateral trade scale, promote cooperation on major strategic projects, carry out cooperation at local levels, work for a good environment for bilateral cooperation and cement the foundation of pubic opinion for bilateral cooperation.

Xi pointed out that since the SCO was founded 10 years ago, the organization has experienced international vicissitudes and traversed an extraordinary course of development. It has become a multilateral mechanism with high reputation and unique influence in the region and even in the international community that its member countries can trust and rely on. Moreover, China and Kazakhstan, as comprehensive strategic partners, should further enhance cooperation in international and regional affairs, including within the SCO, so as to safeguard the common interests of the two nations and contribute to the world peace, stability and development, he added.

For his part, Nazarbayev said Kazakhstan-China relations started from scratch and have achieved rapid and comprehensive development since the establishment of diplomatic ties 20 years ago. Bilateral trade has seen an increase of 25 times over the past decade and both sides have carried out fruitful cooperation in various fields. Bilateral relations are at a new starting point. The Kazakh side is ready to work with China and take the opportunity of this visit to further enhance cooperation in such fields as economy and trade, energy, high-speed railway and high technology, and strengthen coordination in multilateral organizations such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to push bilateral ties to a new level. Nazarbayev also reiterated that his country adheres to the one-China policy and supports China's efforts to crack down on the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism.
